Tell us a little about yourself, Brett!

I was born in Detroit and grew up in the metro area. After college and some time in Chicago and Boston, I moved back to Detroit and I have been calling it home since 2013. I have been living in the Corktown neighborhood with my fiancé, Emily.

I studied business at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. During my college years, I had an opportunity to study abroad at the University of Sydney. My time in Australia sparked my interest in travel and the desire to experience other cultures. It has become a life long passion of mine.

After I graduated with a marketing degree, I moved to Chicago to pursue my career in business. I started as a business analyst and then took my first sales role in the third-party logistics industry. As I gained experience, I went on to manage and develop sales teams in start-ups and well established companies.

How did you get into sales?

Sales has always come natural for me. I have an extraverted personality so I love engaging with people and learning from them. I really enjoy human interaction, building relationships and developing trust. I also love the challenge of understanding people’s motivators. Being a curious and outgoing person is a major reason behind my desire to pursue a sales career.

What are you passionate about?

My number one passion is travel. It is truly such a big world and it has taught me how to see things in different perspectives. My most recent trip was to Croatia and Montenegro where I proposed to my fiancé. In 2011, I traveled to Peru, Chile, Argentine, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil for 6 months. In 2016, I spent a month exploring Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Cambodia. My favorite experiences from those travels included volunteering at a sea turtle research base called Karumbe in Uruguay and hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru.

Another passion of mine is cooking. I do the majority of the cooking in the household. I love trying to make new recipes, tasting new dishes and being creative in the kitchen. I had an amazing opportunity to combine both my passion of travel and cooking during a trip to Vietnam where I took cooking classes. It was an incredible experience to be able to learn how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes and be able to bring those recipes back home to share with family and friends.

Why did you join Rivet, and what are you most excited about?

I first heard about Rivet in a Detroit business publication a few years ago. It’s exciting to see a company founded in the city and so focused on growing in Detroit. I love this city and all the success stories coming out of the business community here. For me, the opportunity to get involved with a Detroit business was a big driver to join RIVET. Additionally, I really connected with the co-founders. I thought they had a great vision and plan to grow RIVET into a successful business. The combination of those things made it an exciting opportunity for me to be a part of the RIVET journey.

What do you love most about Detroit?

I am a history nerd! Detroit’s history really fascinates me. It was founded in 1701 and there are centuries of history that has made Detroit into what it is today. It is a very exciting, diverse and creative place. I think the mixture of hard work and creativity has led to a lot of interesting businesses coming out of this city. I really enjoy the people, restaurants, shops and cultural activities Detroit has to offer.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to find ways to be outside and stay active. No matter the season, I try to find ways to be outdoors. You can find me doing anything: running, hiking, biking, skiing, camping. Staying active is really important to me and being outside getting fresh air is something both my fiancé and I love.
