A Contractor’s Tech Adoption Mentality

How to assess technology, and why prioritizing it is imperative

This article is for construction industry operational leaders. Consider it a guide to successfully approaching technology opportunities across your company. Our aim is to provide insights to help guide your organization’s outlook and mentality when considering technology. Read this article before you even talk about assessing technology.

Tech Adoption Summary

1. Technology Adoption Mindset

We’re all capable of change. Every process and workflow can – and eventually must – be adapted and scaled to the times.

2. Navigating Technology
& Software

Our approach to technology adoption has to be dynamic and as multifaceted as the work we tackle.

We all need to learn assessment, implementation and ownership of our own tech solutions.

3. Culture
(Pre-Evaluation)

If you lack a technology-friendly culture, make fixing that your first step.

4. Perception
(Evaluation)

Perspective and partnerships are paramount. Whether it’s your ERP or other tech, two oft-overlooked critical concerns need attention:

  1. Perception
  2. Assembling the right team

5. Process
(Post-Evaluation)

When considering new technology, be prepared to change processes – even if it means extra work.

The landscape of technology and software has fundamentally transformed various sectors, and construction is no different. Given the overwhelming array of options, contractors often find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of what technology to adopt and how to implement it seamlessly.

Asking questions like, “Which software is the best fit for us?” Or, “We invested in software, but why didn’t it deliver?” is common. While it’d be convenient to offer a universal answer, the reality is the construction industry with its diverse requirements and nuances doesn’t lend itself to a one-size-fits-all solution.

Rather, we’ll need to learn how to approach this evolution as technology buyers, implementers and champions. Because it’s just that: the next evolution of our sector. Simply put, those who hide, deny or ignore this are the Dodo birds of our industry – they’ll be entirely unprepared when a more advanced species arrives on their doorstep.
